| Archie was drafted into the US Navy in 1943. His first tour was patrolling the Atlantic Coast searching for German Submarines, next he was deployed to the Pacific and was involved in the Battle of Laytee Gulf with the Japanese. His Destroyer Escort ( Samuel B. Roberts ) was sunk in that battle. After three days and nights in oil laden and shark infested waters he along with many others were finally rescued. An account of that battle was written by Archie and can be seen in the War Stories section of this web site. Archie received a Purple Heart for his heroic engagement. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
