Birthplace:  Indian Trail, N.C.

While driving along Old Monroe Rd  you could often see Mr. Ray W. Killough driving a tractor or doing other hard labor in his plentiful gardens. For sixty-four  years Mr. Killough worked the land in Union County. He always shared his vegetables with his neighbors and people in need. After  he retired Ray grew large amounts of crops and used them for good purpose as a past time. Mr. Killough served in the Marines for three years during the war. Ray Killough was a hard working man who strived to do the very best he could every day of his life. A long time member of the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, (seventy years) Ray once went over thirty years with perfect attendance. Mr. Killough visited the senior citizen homes every week to  bring light to those less fortunate then himself. There are so many testimonies that could be given that it would take a large book to even try. I am proud to have known a man of such stature.

Raw working the side of the highway just because he thought it would look better
At age 82 Ray was still active, as I drove down the road I saw Ray on his tractor working the side of the road. I stopped to say hello. This is not my land he said but my neighbor said I could work it up and plant flowers, my wife said why are you doing that and I told her , well it's my community and I want it to look good. If we all felt like that we could all have a nice place to live.  (August 17, 2002)
