Curtis graduated from Indian Trail High School where he played varsity basketball and baseball. After high school Curtis attended Wake Forest University. He ran on the Wake Forest Track Team and set the school record, at the time, for the two mile run. He received his A. B. Degree in math and French. After graduation, Curtis became a high school math teacher in the Union County School system where he met Mabel Lee, also a school teacher. They were married on October 9, 1938, in Yanceyville, N.C. Curtis taught school most of his life but at the time of his death was associated with Pied Piper Exterminating Co. in Charlotte. He was a great lover of nature and the soil. He spent many early hours before going to his work farming and caring for his cattle. After a hard day at work he always managed to care for his cattle late in the afternoon. Curtis was noted for his strong physical body, honesty, and being a hard worker. His connection with Indian Trail Presbyterian Church was most sincere, serving as a deacon, and elder, and as Adult Sunday School teacher until his death. He was a man of strong Christian faith, great sincerity of purpose, cheerfulness, and constantly courteous to all people. He had a great knowledge of God's Word and lived the word. |
